How to read a VIN, character by character.

A VIN's 17 characters aren't random: every position says something. What each block means, how to find the model year in position 10, and the letters that expose a fake number.

A VIN reads in six blocks. The first three characters say who built the car and in what country; positions 4 to 8 describe the model and engine; position 9 is an anti-fraud check; 10 is the year; 11 is the assembly plant; and 12 to 17 are the serial number. Once you know where to look, you confirm year and origin for free, without taking the seller’s word for it.

It is worth learning. Reading the VIN doesn’t just tell you which car is in front of you: it is your first defense against a tampered number. In 2024 alone, 850,708 vehicles were stolen in the United States, according to the NICB (US data), and many return to the road wearing another car’s identity. Knowing how to read those 17 characters is what separates a quick check from an expensive surprise.

How to read a VIN: the six blocks

The VIN is an international standard (ISO 3779) and, in the North American format, it is regulated by NHTSA. That means the characters always fall in the same order. Once you see the six blocks, every VIN reads the same way.

Take this example, a real reference VIN: 1HGCM82633A004352. Here is how it breaks down.

Block by block, here is what each part tells you:

  • Positions 1 to 3, the WMI (who and where). The first character is the region: a 1, 4 or 5 is the United States; a 2 is Canada; a 3 is Mexico; a J is Japan; a K is South Korea; a W is Germany (per ISO 3780). Characters 2 and 3 finish identifying the manufacturer. In the example, 1HG is a Honda built in the United States.
  • Positions 4 to 8, the VDS (what the car is). These describe the model, body, engine and restraint system. Each manufacturer uses its own table, so these five characters are read with the maker’s guide or a decoder.
  • Position 9, the check digit. A calculation that validates the rest of the number. More on that below.
  • Position 10, the model year. A single letter or number. It is the position that causes the most confusion and the one most worth mastering.
  • Position 11, the assembly plant. The code for the factory the car came out of.
  • Positions 12 to 17, the serial number. The production sequence. It is what separates your car from another identical one off the same line.

Before you decode anything, find the number. It is on the dashboard, visible through the windshield, and on the driver’s door jamb. Here is where each copy of the VIN lives and why they all have to match.

The model year is position 10

If you only learn one position, make it this one. The model year is a single character in slot 10, and it follows a fixed table. We are in the cycle that started in 2010: A is 2010, B is 2011, and so on until it closes out 30 years. A 2024 car carries an R; a 2025, an S; a 2026, a T.

There is a trap worth knowing. Because there are only 30 codes, they repeat every 30 years: A was 2010, but it was also 1980. To tell which cycle a car belongs to, look at position 7: if there is a number there, the car is from the 1980-2009 cycle; if there is a letter, it is 2010 or later. In the example 1HGCM82633A004352, position 7 is a 2 (a number) and position 10 is a 3, so the year is 2003, not 2033.

Trick

Model year, in two steps

Read position 10 for the year code, and position 7 for the cycle: if 7 is a number, the car is from 1980 to 2009; if it is a letter, 2010 or later. That way one code (say, R) never leaves you guessing between a 1994 and a 2024.

The letters a VIN never uses

This is one of the fastest checks there is. The standard never uses the letters I, O or Q, in any of the 17 positions, so they aren’t confused with 1 and 0 (ISO 3779). If you see any of those three letters in a VIN, the number was either miscopied or it is fake. No exceptions.

In the year position (slot 10) the exclusion list is even longer: on top of I, O and Q, you also won’t see U, Z or 0. That is why the year sequence jumps from H to J, and from N to P.

An I, an O or a Q inside a VIN isn’t a detail. It is proof the number is not legitimate.

Position 9: the check digit

The middle character, position 9, describes nothing about the car. It is a check digit: a math computation over the other 16 characters that only works out if the number is internally consistent (NHTSA, 49 CFR §565). It is required on US and Canada market vehicles, and it can be a number from 0 to 9 or the letter X.

What it does for you: if you decode a VIN and the check digit doesn’t compute, there are two explanations. The innocent one is that someone copied a character wrong. The one that matters is that the number was altered, hand-stamped onto a plate that isn’t the original. The step-by-step calculation is a topic of its own, but knowing the position exists is enough to stop trusting a VIN that no decoder can validate.

What the VIN tells you, and what it doesn’t

Reading the VIN confirms the car’s identity: make, country, year, and that the number is consistent. What it does not give you is the history. The VIN by itself won’t tell you whether the car was wrecked, flooded, or had its odometer rolled back. For that, the number is the key, not the answer.

  1. Write down all 17 characters exactly, without mixing up letters and numbers.
  2. Read the first 3 (WMI): country and manufacturer.
  3. Read position 10 for the year, and 7 for the cycle (number = older, letter = 2010 or later).
